Violet "Vi" is one of the three protagonists in Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling. She is the second member to join Team Snakemouth. She has a close sister named Jaune.

Appearance

Like most bees, her body is primarily yellow with black stripes. Around her neck is a fluffy cream-colored collar and on the end of her abdomen is a black stinger. She also has a pair of translucent wings on her back for limited flight capabilities. What sets her apart from other honeybees is her rather short stature, which often causes others to mistake her for a child.

In the non-canonical Version 0.4.1 April Fools demo, Vi has a radically different design from her normal appearance. She is shown to have a light skin complexion with golden hair and dark gray eyes. She wears a beige sailor fuku with a dark blue skirt and ribbon, with the former having a square pattern. She also wears black bracelets and headband, and cyan beads, creating a downwards pigtail.

Background

Vi was born in the Hive and raised there, having an attachment/sibling relationship with Jaune. At some point, Vi begins to work in the Honey Factory but very much doesn’t enjoy the job and wishes to instead be an explorer. Vi’s desire to break off from the norm that the society of the Hive had caused her to get a bit alienated by her peers, especially from Jaune. She was often teased a bit by others in the Hive, but Jaune, having a lack of faith, seemed to bother her more than anything.

After hearing Jaune’s doubts, having her own sister tell her that exploring was a dangerous job for other insects, and that she didn’t think Vi could be an explorer, it caused a fight to break out between the siblings where she says "some rather mean things". Vi leaves, but not before telling off several members of the Hive, including her boss in the Factory and even Queen Bianca.

After leaving the hive, Vi spends some time in the Ant Kingdom, and establishes herself within the Underground Tavern, wherein she buys her Beemerang from Shades. Before the events of the game, she gets kicked out of the tavern for a currently unspecified reason, and eventually it leads up to her going to the Explorers’ Association in an attempt to talk someone into letting her explore.

Personality

Vi is loud, sarcastic, arrogant and selfish, and is often the comedic relief and/or the butt of jokes. She, however does have some form of heart.

An example of her selfishness (at least at the beginning of the game) is having wanted to enter Snakemouth Den for her own personal gain. She is also shown to be somewhat cowardly, abandoning Kabbu when the Spider ambushes them. She does however care for her friends and is perfectly capable of tolerating them, even when they end up annoying her. She is also very greedy as shown during many quests, where she often asks for a reward after completion.

Unlike most bees, she isn't snobbish and uptight. She dislikes bees who act as such. She is also shown to be a poor actor, as she is shown breaking character without any attempt to improvise as shown in Theater Help Wanted!

Abilities

On the field, Vi is able to hit switches, grab items and attack enemies that are far away using her trusty Beemerang and eventually even carry party members while flying to cross large gaps. This makes her arguably the most useful and flexible party member.

In battle, she acts as the party's long-range support. She is able to hit any enemy from any position using her Beemerang, and is also able to generate a minor healing item at the cost of TP. Using her Beemerang, she can knock down flying enemies so that Kabbu and Leif may hit them with their basic attacks.

Trivia

Vi was created by Mar.^[1]
According to Mar, the programmer and animator for the game, Vi is around 16-17 years old.^[2] However, when asked again later, Mar said to "ask Genow", the lead writer for the game.^[3] Genow has not commented.
Following a similar trend of color-based names, her sister Jaune's name is French for "yellow". Additionally, purple (violet) and yellow are complementary colors in the color wheel.
According to Genow, the correct pronunciation of Vi's name is the one that rhymes with the word "bee"^[4].
- In the manual of the physical limited release of the game, Genow states that Vi's sister Jaune actually pronounces Vi's name like it rhymes with "bye".
According to Tristan Alric, the composer for the game, Vi was supposed to have her own theme with its own sad remix, similarly to Leif. Tristan stated that her theme was mostly based on surf rock tunes, but none of the test samples were deemed interesting enough, so the idea was cut.^[5]
According to Genow, Vi initially had a much more abrasive and meaner personality at the earlier development stages, and it had to be toned down for the final product to prevent her from becoming completely unlikeable.^[6]
- Also according to Genow, Vi was originally going to be a thief.^[7]
Vi is the only one of the main three to not have an official birthday. This was due to the developers not agreeing on what her birthday should be.^[8]
- However, she has an unofficial birthday of May 5th, Children's day, which would annoy her.^[9]
According to Mar, he interprets Vi's voice to be similar to Kainé from NieR Gestalt.^[10]
Vi's Beemerang appears as an item in the Abomi Nation crossover with Bug Fables.
Within the game's files, Vi has an unused skill called "Revival Massage", which was to revive a party member with 5 HP.^[11]
