Marcio "Mar" Cletion Jr. (Born June 9[1] 1996)[note 1], also known online as marciocjr13 and Insanesana, is a Brazilian artist, character designer, programmer, and comic artist.

Although much is unknown about his early life, it is known that he learned English at age 5 to play Paper Mario using a dictionary and school.[2] His family also wanted him to become a biologist (or at least get him into biology) at age 6,[3] [4] and had worked with his family on their local computer repair business.[5]. He started doing art around his prepubescence or adolescence, making Paper Mario comics [6] and even a fictitious species known as the "Sana".[7][8]

In 2010, Mar would meet Jose Fernando "Genow" Gracia on a Pokémon Nuzlocke forum.[9] The two became friends, making a Pokémon Fire Red/Leaf Green ROM hack titled Pokémon Manly Pink, a ROM hack that had every Pokémon up to Gen V in the game. The two also would make comics regarding the topic.[9]

Sometime during or after high school, Mar would learn coding and head out to university. Mar mostly taught himself on how to code, though did take a class of Basic C.[10] Mar, using his knowledge of coding would experiment with some original idea concepts along with Genow, though most didn't go through.[11] One of these projects was a test prototype only known as "Project Dreamdiver".[12]

During this time, he, Genow, and another friend named Oma made a comic that revolved around a prototype Team Snakemouth, with the plot eventually becoming Chapter 1 of the final game.[13] Mar would also draw other comics, featuring other bug characters or their personas as bugs, some of which would eventually become characters in the final game.[13]

Notes

  1. Although his DeviantArt from the archived time periods both cited links lists his age as 17 and 15 respectively (meaning he would've been born in 1994), conflicting evidence about his age regarding his English training and the first Paper Marios release shows he would've been 13 by 2009, 15 in 2012, and 12 when he would've created his DeviantArt account.
